Sturgeon Guarding Program
A Natural Wonder. Each spring, prehistoric lake sturgeon migrate into area rivers to spawn. Volunteers and members from the local chapter of Sturgeon for Tomorrow stand watch over these ancient giants to deter poaching. Volunteers may also assist in conducting sturgeon research wiih Michigan State University researchers. The lake sturgeon, the largest and the oldest fish to live in the Great Lakes, they can live 100-150 years, grow to 8 feet in length and weigh more than 200 pounds.
