2018 Waterways Festival Art Poster Contest Winner
    By Polly Schneider

The new addition of an Art Poster Contest to the Waterways Festival, sponsored by The Cheboygan Daily Tribune, has produced 4 unique pieces of art.  Varying from sharpie to pastel, these artists’ interpretations of our waterways showcase just a little bit of the talent we have in our community.
The entries where turned in to the Cheboygan Area Chamber of Commerce office on or before June 1st and where displayed for judging by Cheboygan Chamber Ambassadors and Waterways Committee members until Friday June 15th.  The votes where then tallied and the winner was designated.
We are proud to announce the winning artwork is by Cheboygan native, Maggie Kimbrell.  Maggie is a 2018 graduate of Cheboygan Area High School.  She is 18 years old, and has been drawing and sculpting for over 12 years.  Maggie has won several 1st place awards in Cheboygan High School’s art show, and was a featured artist at this spring’s art exhibit “Studio Art Quartet” which was held at the Cheboygan Carnegie.  Her plans for the future include attending The Kendall School of Art and Design in Grand Rapids where she will study interior design.
Maggie’s artwork for the Waterways Festival Art Poster Contest was done in chalk pastel on heavy drawing paper.  The inspiration for this artwork was taken from a photo on Cheboygan.com, which epitomizes the spirit of our waterways.
This original artwork, along with the 3 others will be on display at Purple Tree Books during the 2018 Waterways Festival, from June 28th to June 30th.  During this time, a silent auction will be held for the original artwork, with all proceeds going to Miss Kimbrell as the prize for winning the contest.  The auction winner will be notified on Monday July 2nd.
Purple Tree books will be open from 10 am to 6 pm on Thursday June 28th, and from 10 am to 8 pm on Friday June 29th and Saturday June 30th.  Purple Tree Books is located at 336 N. Main St., directly across the street from Festival Square.  Be sure to stop in a view the artwork, and bid on the original 2018 Waterways Festival Art Poster Contest winning artwork.
In addition to having a chance to bid on this original artwork, it will be reproduced as a limited edition commemorative poster which will be signed and numbered by the artist.  This poster will be available for purchase beginning June 28th at the Cheboygan Area Chamber of Commerce office, Purple Tree Books, and at the Waterways Festival information table which will be located in Festival Square during the Waterways Festival, which will be held Thursday June 28th to Sunday July 1st.

    Hoffius Preserve Bicycle Ride Tour

    By Cheboygan Trails Council

Beginning at  8;30 am at Festival Square Jim Conboy  will lead a bike ride north on the North Central State Trail  to and back from the Hoffius Preserve just off US 23. The total round trip  distance is 15 1/2 miles. A volunteer will sweep to make sure no one is left behind. Once at the Preserve bikes will be left at the entrance,  with a volunteer,  and riders will  walk about 1/2 mile down  to the shore of Lake Huron where the beauty of the Lake can be appreciated. Total time 2 3/4 to 3hours.

While the trail is flat, riders should be prepared to ride the distance comfortably.  It is not a ride for young children. Since the path to the shore of Lake Huron includes steps and uneven ground, comfortable walking shoes are advised. Helmets are encouraged.

It would be appreciated if you would sign up for the ride though that is not required to participate.
